Elizabeth Edwards, wife of former senator and presidential candidate John Edwards, died Tuesday. She died at age 61 after a six year battle with cancer. Edwards became a national figure in her fight against cancer and as a partner in her husband’s political career.

On Monday, Edwards announced she was ending her treatment for cancer. She died at her North Carolina home on Tuesday surrounded by her three children, siblings, friends and her estranged husband, John, the family told the Associated Press.

“Today we have lost the comfort of Elizabeth’s presence but, she remains the heart of this family,” the family said in a statement to the media. “We love her and will never know anyone more inspiring or full of life. On behalf of Elizabeth we want to express our gratitude to the thousands of kindred spirits who moved and inspired her along the way. Your support and prayers touched our entire family.”

The family asked that donations be made to the Wade Edwards Foundation, which benefits the Wade Edwards Learning Lab.
