Brian Encinia entered his innocent plea on Tuesday evening with his attorney. The 30-year-old was indicted on perjury charges for allegedly lying about Bland's arrest.

U.S. District Judge David Hittner announced a Jan. 23, 2017 trial start date for the wrongful death suit filed by Bland's family.

Sandra Bland, the 28-year-old Chicago native who was found dead in a Texas jail cell in July, committed suicide because her family and friends failed to post her bond after she was arrested for a minor traffic violation.
