June is Black Music Month, and My92.7 is celebrating with daily features about national and local black musicians. In Charlotte, many people are familiar with artists such as Anthony Hamilton and Jodeci. However, Charlotte has a deeper musical tradition that spans gospel, jazz and R&B. For example, James Brown’s hit “Papa’s Got A Brand New Bag” was recorded here in the Queen City.

In the next few weeks, My92.7 will highlight the local black music scene — old and new — with the help of Levine Museum of the New South historian Tom Hanchett and local artists. My92.7 will also feature local celebrities and leaders discussing their relationships to music.
