Vance High graduate Devyne Johnson is bringing her indie film, “Mosaic,” to Ayrsley Grand Cinemas 14 on Saturday and Sunday.
“Mosiac” is the first screenplay written by Johnson, and produced by her company Artefaekts, is close to her heart.
“I couldn’t move on with anything else without honoring this one,” said Johnson who has written several screenplays in recent years.
Johnson, 33, describes “Mosaic” as a family narrative that is “War Room” meets “August: Osage County.” It’s about accepting people for who they are and supporting them, Johnson said.
The story’s main character, Ruth Anderson, is an ambitious attorney, and divorced mother with misplaced priorities and shattered relationships with her immediate family. The other key characters are Mara Anderson, Ruth’s high school senior who trying to figure out her next move. There’s Aunt Nell the maternal figure and Judge Rohi, the God incarnate, Johnson said.
Johnson says Mara is based on her, but “I see myself in a lot of these characters.”
Johnson and her team shot the film in Atlanta where Johnson lives and works as a costume designer for the network FX. The Alabama State graduate has worked on “Stranger Things,” “Atlanta” and “Halt and Catch Fire.” While working on these projects, she was also mining the production teams for potential crew members for her film. Last year, she put her team together and began filming “Mosaic.”
“Mosiac” is only being screened in select cities, Atlanta, Los Angeles, Nashville, Raleigh, Chicago and Washington, D.C.
