Andrew Jackson, the seventh president of the United States, has been the face of the $20 bill since 1928. 87 years later, a women’s group called WomenOn20 are waging an interesting battle to give the bill a new, empowering look! WomenOn20 want to see a historic and significant woman on the bill and have listed fifteen heroines for the Obama administration to consider, including Harriet Tubman and Rosa Parks.

It sounds a bit sudden or random, but there is some math to WomenOn20’s logic to change the all-boys club of currency. In 2020, it’ll be the 100th anniversary of the 19th amendment that solidified a woman’s right to vote in America. Susan B. Anthony famously led the woman’s suffrage to get that amendment passed and in memory of the women who made herstory, one should be on an American bill. Currently, only Native American icon Sacagawea and Helen Keller (on the flip side of the Alabama quarter) are recognized, and they are in coins.
And why did WomenOn20 select the American $20 bill? This group of ladies want Jackson off it because of his notorious co-sign of the Indian Removal Act of 1830. The culturally-charged act forced Native Americans into Oklahoma for White Europeans. The decision was later nicknamed the Trail of Tears for many Natives died during their travels away from home. In their eyes, his racist decision-making has no place on an common necessity such as money.
We actually think this is pretty dope! Wouldn’t it great to see Sojourner Truth on a bill? And while we’ve questioned whether feminist or women’s groups exhibiting exclusivity, WomenOn20 also acknowledged the brilliant work of women of color in history too.
Below are all 15 candidates for the WomenOn20 proposal.
- Alice Paul
- Betty Friedan
- Shirley Chisholm
- Sojourner Truth
- Rachel Carson
- Rosa Parks
- Barbara Jordan
- Margaret Sanger
- Patsy Mink
- Clara Barton
- Harriet Tubman
- Frances Perkins
- Susan B. Anthony
- Eleanor Roosevelt
- Elizabeth Cady Stanton
