The Charlotte City Council votes to make Juneteenth a paid government holiday.

Those looking to celebrate Juneteenth this year can do so at various events happening in the Charlotte area.

In 1865, two years after President Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation went into effect, Black people in Galveston, Texas were finally liberated.

As we look to celebrate this date this year following a slew of unjust murders and social unrest, here’s a playlist celebrating all of our melanin magic.

What was born out of emancipation in Texas has become a global celebration of Black freedom.

This was more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation had freed their counterparts around the country. Although Juneteenth is not a federal holiday, most states and the District of Columbia have passed legislation recognizing it as a holiday or observance.
