The Trump administration filed a lawsuit Tuesday accusing North Carolina’s election board of violating federal law by failing to collect required ID numbers on some voter registration forms.

According to WCNC, the Justice Department claims the state is not complying with the 2003 Help America Vote Act, which mandates applicants provide either a driver’s license number, the last four digits of their Social Security number, or be assigned a unique ID.

The lawsuit says a statewide registration form failed to clearly explain this requirement. Although the form was updated in 2023, the board did not follow up with voters registered since 2004 to correct missing information.
