As Election Day nears, voters are questioning which forms of ID are acceptable at polling places. A local viewer contacted WBTV’s Fact Check team with concerns about reports of individuals being turned away in Charlotte for using temporary driver’s licenses issued by the DMV as voter ID.
WBTV reached out to the Mecklenburg County Board of Elections for clarification. Kristin Mavromatis from the board confirmed that temporary driver’s licenses are not considered valid voter identification. This rule is set by the state’s General Assembly, not the local election office. Mavromatis noted that while these paper IDs are valid for driving, they do not fulfill the state’s voter ID requirements.
