One of my favorite movies of all time is “Brown Sugar.” I am a fan of the double entendre, and this  movie is full of them.  The source of all of them is the question Sidney, an entertainment reporter and new editor of Double XL magazine, asks at the start of each of her interviews: “When did you first fall in love with hip-hop?”

Sidney gets to get musically close and personal in these interviews with DJs, MCs, and athletes.

We wanted to do the same; so, we reached out to a few of Charlotte’s trendsetters, tastemakers, elected officials, and celebrities. We are asking: “When did you fall in love with music?”

Each day we will feature one or two people and their answers.  First up, Joy Randall, MUA (that’s make-up artist for those that don’t know).

Joy is the owner and sole proprietor of Flawless Make Up Art in Charlotte, NC.  A liscensed cosmetologist with more than five years experience, she has worked for companies such as MAC Cosmetics, L’Oreal and Cover Girl.  Her work has been featured on the covers of national publications and has been published in People and Sophisticates Black Hair, just to name two. She has also worked in film, and runway and with major television networks like VH1, BET and Radio One’s own TV One. This fall her work was seen on VH1’s Fantasia For Real.  If it requires make up, Joy does it. She prides herself being able to create flawless natural looks to wild fantasy pieces. She gives it to you mild, spicy, and just plain hot! Let’s see what this Makeup Killah has to say about music.

Brandi: It has been said that music has the power to connect, erase boundaries and heal the soul. What is your relationship with music? How does it make you feel?

Joy: I really love music! How could we be without it? It brings out the most wonderful fantasies, makes you remember moments in time, makes you think about someone, describes so many emotions, and all across the board, across every color line…music is powerful!!!

Brandi: What’s your all-time favorite song or the song that brings back the most memories for you?

Joy: Well Erykah Badu is my absolute favorite artist in the world! Any song she sings … but honestly I’d have to say anything by Biggie. That was what we listened to as a teenager and any of his songs take me back to me and my girls back in the day.

Brandi: What’s your favorite musical era? Why?

Joy: The early 90’s man…the R&B Groups Intro, Silk, Jodeci, Shai…shall I go on? Hip-hop was really doing its thang! Or maybe its just what I grew up on?  Guess I came up on bump and grind music! People could really sing back then too!

Brandi: Last questions, what’s on your iPod right now?

Joy: To be honest,  I don’t have one. But I’m bumpin a lil Usher, of course Erykah;” Return of the Ankh,” and the new Janelle Monae … all in a nice rotation. Imma get me an iPod soon though! Especially now that you asked!
