A three-year-old from South Carolina shot himself to death on Sunday while playing with a gun in his mother’s bedroom, NBC News reports.

Savion Barrow was at his Rock Hill home with his mother and 10-year-old sister when the incident occurred. His mother, who hasn’t been identified, told police she was watching television when she heard the semi-automatic gun go off. She turned around to discover that little Savion had shot himself in the head while playing with the firearm.

He was pronounced dead at a local hospital.

Rock Hill Police Department spokesman Mark Bollinger told NBC News the father of the child was not home at the time. It’s currently unclear whether the mother will face any charges. The police are still trying to determine how Savion gained access to the weapon.

Sadly, this is the second child-related shooting in two months in Rock Hill. In October, a two-year-old accidentally shot his grandmother in the back while she was driving. The toddler found the. 357 revolver in a pouch in the back passenger seat of the car. The woman recovered from the gunshot wound, but her sister – the vehicle and gun owner – was charged with unlawful neglect.

Police encourage gun owners to ensure their weapons have proper safety measures.
