A tragic event that took place Thursday evening in a Bronx apartment has left one 16-year-old girl dead and has police on the hunt for a person of interest in the case. Zion Willis was allegedly playing with a gun after visiting the apartment and shot herself in the mouth which prompted gun owner Dale Weston to flee the scene.

Details are still developing, but it appears Willis was visiting a friend in the Mount Eden neighborhood. Weston, 42, was there as well, and showed off his gun to Willis and her friend. According to sources, Willis held the .40-caliber weapon in her hand while inspecting it then pulled the trigger. In a panic, Weston grabbed his gun and left the apartment.

According to reports from DNA Info and New York Daily News, Weston is a resident of the apartment where Willis lost her life. Willis, who lived in Brooklyn, was at the apartment visiting the 18-year-old sister of Weston’s girlfriend. There were other adults and an unreported number of children inside the apartment when the shooting occurred.

A cousin, Sara Gray, gave several statements on behalf of Willis’ family inquiring as to how this tragic shooting unfolded. Gray shared that Willis was an excellent dancer who once took classes at the famed Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. Willis was also a part-time counselor for troubled youth at the Brownsville Youth Court.

The case revealed that Weston has several arrests on his record dating back to 1990, comprised mostly of drug offenses and robbery. The Daily News interviewed the superintendent of the building where he lived and expressed that Weston was a troublesome resident.

Weston is not a suspect at the time nor has he been charged. Police are hoping to question him regarding what happened last Thursday.
