Mosby made his announcement at a rally in West Baltimore on Sunday outside of the Madison Park North Apartments. In addition to delivering a 30-minute speech, he promised voters a direct approach to addressing the persistent conflict between civilians and police officers.
Currently, the State’s Attorney is prosecuting six officers charged in the death of Freddie Gray. But the site reports the councilman will take a different approach in tackling police reform. Mosby hasn’t commented on her husband’s bid, but did stand with him in support on Sunday. The councilman also spoke with WBAL about his decision to run for mayor.
In an email to supporters inviting them to his announcement on Sunday, he wrote, “We’re at a crucial crossroads, where we can succumb to the challenges facing Baltimore or elevate this beautiful city, maximizing all its great potential. I know the path I’m taking. Will you join me?”
Mosby says his marriage should not affect how voters decide on a new mayor.
The Baltimore Sun reports:
“I don’t think that’s an issue,” Mosby said. “To the average Baltimore city resident who wants their life improved … that’s not going to play into their decision.”
After current mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake announced she would not seek re-election, a large group of Democrats have entered the race. They include former Mayor Sheila Dixon, state Sen. Catherine Pugh, and City Councilman Carl Stokes. Republican Brian Charles Vaeth has also filed running papers, along with Green Party member Bonnie Lane.
Calvin Young III, another candidate for mayor, released a statement calling the councilman’s decision the creation of an unwanted “political dynasty.”
“The voters that I talk to every day have made it clear they will not be voting for political dynasties or personal ambitions. They are voting for someone who is a fresh face, forward-thinking, and produces results. On April 26th, Baltimore is voting for change, that’s why I am running for Mayor,” he said.
The filing deadline for candidates is Feb. 3.
