Jordan House is Eric Benet’s (born Eric Benet Jordan) new label and he’s already filled it up with some great talent. Calvin Richardson is one of them. The North Carolina-born R&B singer who had some modest hits in the 90’s is being re-launched and it appears that it’s about time. (He’s also J. Anthony Brown’s favorite singer.)

“As soon as this whole label thing became a reality [Calvin Richardson] was the first artists I wanted to sign,” Benet says. “I remember back in the day hearing him and sometimes when you hear a new artist singing at a certain level you feel a little intimidated. Calvin got that vintage soul voice. As soon as this all came together I was like ‘Where Calvin at?’

As a label owner, Benet says is does become hard to separate his own career from promoting others at times.

‘I’d be thinking ‘Now why am I giving this Negro this record right now’ he said. ‘I need another hit,’ Benet said, maybe jokingly. ‘Nah, Calvin had one of those voices when you come up with a dope song, you can’t wait to hear his voice on it.’

Richardson is well known for his Bobby Womack tribute, which is ironic since he never met the iconic singer before his recent death.

“Eric is probably the best boss you could ever have. He’s a player turned coach. He’s like a Phil Jackson,” says Richardson.

Richardson’s new album I Am Calvin is available September 30th. The first single ‘We Gon’ Love Tonight” can be downloaded via iTunes.
