Trader Joe’s (344 stores in 25 states and growing)

If you want to work in a grocery store you better pray to the heavens that a Trader Joe’s is in your area. And you better hope that an employee recently died because that’s probably the only way you’re getting hired.

Trader Joe’s starts their employees at a salary of $40k to $60k a year. Starting salary. Starting. Salary. Like we said…pray.

Whole Foods (4.24 billion in revenue last quarter)

Not sure why it’s the grocery chains that have so many conscientious employers, but Whole Foods makes for another fine example of taking care of their workers. The wages of the lowest tier of employees averages around $15 an hour. That’s more than double the current federal minimum wage.

QuikTrip ($11.21 billion in revenue for 2013)

How does a gas station and convenience store manage to grow even when the economy is down? By investing in their employees. While paying $40k a year to starting employees they managed to grow their business to 645 stores in 11 states. So when the biggest companies complain about needing to keep salaries low, all that means is that they’re bad at good business.

Google (We don’t have enough space for all the zeroes needed)

Google is kind of a curveball on this list because they don’t really have any minimum wage positions. Most of their employees are highly skilled. The key here, though, is employment happiness. Most everyone at Google is pretty damn happy.

Google has only been around for 16 years. But by taking a decent search engine business model and keeping their employees happy Google has grown to be one of the biggest companies in the world. In 16 years. Hope you took notes, Walmart.
