Although Jason Collins is currently not on an NBA roster after coming out in 2013, he is credited with being the first openly gay player in the NBA that is still active. Collins came out in a Sports Illustrated piece that he penned himself.
John Amaechi
After several years in the NBA, John Amaechi came out as gay in his book ‘Man In The Middle’ which was released after his retirement in 2007. To date, Amaechi is one of the higher profile athletes to come out before Sam.
Kwame Harris
In March of last year, Kwame Harris came out as gay in an interview with CNN in 2013. Unfortunately, his admission was semi-involuntary due to news of a skirmish between him and his then boyfriend was uncovered by the media.
