I was catching up on my daily Twitter reading and found an interesting post by a popular ATL radio jock. He posted a comment from a Georgia gubernatorial candidate, Nathan Deal.  According to the tweet Deal said: “We got all the complaints of the GHETTO GRANDMOTHERS…”

Being the prudent journalist that I am, I started investigating the situation.  I found that Deal did indeed make the comment.  According to the Atlanta  Journal Constitution, the comments were made in the following context:

On Saturday morning, before a breakfast gathering of the Cherokee County GOP, congressman and candidate for governor Nathan Deal was describing his role in legislation to demand proof of citizenship for federal or state health care benefits.

Said Deal:

“We got all the complaints of the ghetto grandmothers who didn’t have birth certificates and all that. We wrote some very liberal language as to how you can verify it. My mother was born in 1906 and she didn’t have a birth certificate. They didn’t give birth certificates back then. But we got her one, because you can do it under the proper procedures of your state.”

Unfortunately for Deal, videographers from the rival campaigns of Karen Handel and Eric Johnson were there to record the moment. One of them provided this:

The ATL jock that posted the statement suggested that Deal’s comments were racist in nature.  I haven’t made a determination on that just yet. Even after fully listening to the comment in context I am confused as to why he would use the term ghetto grandmother.  It seems misplaced to me, but I digress.

In my humble opinion, the real issue is people like Deal, who make comments like these so freely (think Bill James in Charlotte), have lost track of reality. They are the people who, if we don’t vote, will get elected because they are making statements like these (and their are others who agree with what they are saying).

It is imperative that we get out and vote.  Check here for election details and make sure you vote in this mid-term election.
