NC Drivers Will Soon Have Their License on Their Phone

RALEIGH, N.C. — North Carolina drivers are getting ready for a major change in the way they carry identification. Mobile driver’s licenses and state ID cards are expected to launch by the end of 2026, giving residents the option to keep a secure digital version of their credentials on their smartphones. The mobile ID will initially be available through the state’s official NC Wallet app. Residents will be able to scan their physical license or ID, take a selfie and have their information verified against NCDMV records. The digital credential will be available at no additional cost for people with valid North Carolina licenses or IDs. (NCDOT)
And don’t worry — your physical license isn’t going anywhere. The mobile version will be optional and legally equivalent to the physical card. However, state officials warn that some businesses may not have the technology to accept mobile IDs right away, so keeping your physical license as a backup is still recommended. (NCDOT)
Mobile IDs are also expected to be accepted at TSA checkpoints at more than 250 airports, including Charlotte Douglas International Airport and Raleigh-Durham International Airport. Support for Apple, Google and Samsung wallets is expected to follow in early 2027. (NCDOT)
Here at 105.3 RNB, we’re always looking at what’s changing across North Carolina. For drivers, this could mean one less card to carry — but until the technology is accepted everywhere, don’t leave that physical license at home just yet.
