Charlotte will not regain hosting rights for the CIAA basketball tournaments, officials confirmed, ending hopes of bringing back the high-profile HBCU event. The CIAA informed the Charlotte Regional Visitors Authority that the city would not be considered for the 2027–2029 tournament cycle. According to WCNC, Charlotte previously hosted the men’s and women’s tournaments from 2006 to 2020, generating an estimated $656 million in economic impact. Despite highlighting premier venues and proximity to HBCU campuses, the bid was unsuccessful. The tournament moved to Baltimore in 2022 after a pandemic pause. The CIAA includes 12 HBCUs, including Johnson C. Smith and Livingstone College.
