A backyard flock in eastern North Carolina tested positive for highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) on March 3, according to WBTV. The affected flock, located in Dare County, was not specified in the announcement.

In line with U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) guidelines, the infected birds were euthanized to prevent the spread of the disease. HPAI spreads rapidly through the air, feces, and can be transferred between flocks via contaminated clothing, boots, and equipment. The disease can affect chickens, turkeys, and other bird species, contributing to rising egg prices.
