Minimum wage

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Board of Education on Tuesday unveiled a proposal to raise the minimum wage for non-teacher school employees to $20 per hour. According to WCCB, the plan, which would impact nearly 3,900 workers including janitors, bus drivers, and teacher assistants, is already included in the district’s budget and is estimated to cost over $25 million.

If approved, the wage increase would be retroactive to July 1, 2024. However, the proposal does not include salary increases for teachers.

Board member Summer Nunn called the proposal a step in the right direction but said it falls short of addressing the region’s cost of living. A recent study shows that a worker in Charlotte needs to earn at least $24 per hour to afford basic living expenses. Despite the increase, many employees may still struggle with the city’s rising housing costs.
