The final Friday of 2024 brings rainy, chilly conditions to the Carolinas, with moisture from the Gulf of Mexico combining with overcast skies and northeasterly winds. Many areas will stay in the 30s and 40s this afternoon, as a winter wedge lingers into the weekend. More rain will move in from the west, with heavy downpours expected at times. Temperature differences will be notable on Saturday, with northern and western areas stuck in the 40s, while southern and eastern communities could reach near 70°.
According to WCCB, by Sunday morning, a low-pressure system and cold front will move into the region, bringing a line of strong storms with heavy rain, gusty winds, and a slight tornado risk. The western Carolinas could see 1-3 inches of rain, with some areas receiving up to 4 inches. Sunny skies will return by Monday afternoon, with highs in the 60s to close out the year. A few showers are possible for New Year’s Eve Tuesday, but the disturbance will be much weaker. The first day of 2025 is expected to be sunny and cooler, with highs in the 40s and 50s.
