A “hard freeze” from a polar air mass is expected to hit Charlotte, the North Carolina mountains, and Upstate South Carolina this weekend, with cold temperatures possibly lingering for several days, according to National Weather Service meteorologists. Overnight lows could dip into the mid-20s in Mecklenburg County and surrounding areas early and mid-next week. According to the Charlotte Observer, the coldest air of the season is expected to arrive late Friday into Saturday.

On Friday, Charlotte’s high will only reach 53 degrees, dropping to 49 on Saturday, then climbing slightly to 52 on Sunday before falling to 45 on Monday and 44 on Tuesday. Temperatures are forecast to warm to 49 on Wednesday and 57 by Thursday.

Lows are predicted to be 24 degrees early Saturday, 27 on Sunday, 26 on Monday, 23 on Tuesday, 24 on Wednesday, and 32 on Thursday. The NWS advises residents to bundle up with layers, wear mittens or gloves, and keep pets protected from the extreme cold.
