J. Remy compares his childhood to that of the Jackson 5, but there’s no bitterness in his voice when he talks about those early years. Instead the young singer fondly remember his dad beating his siblings out of bed at 3 a.m. to make them practice.

The discipline paid off. This weekend J. Remy joins about a dozen other singers in the final round of the Andre Harrell Superstar Soul Search in Atlanta. J. Remy joins Amaye as one of the Charlotte finalist to compete in Atlanta on Saturday. Both contestants won the Charlotte competition a couple of weeks ago at the House of Jazz.

J. Remy, born Jeremy Cooper, says singing is a Cooper tradition. His mother sang with New Jersey Mass Choir with Donnie Harper. His father still sings in a quartet. J. Remy hails from Raleigh where he writes music and sings full-time.

“I sing because I love it. It’s a part of me,” he said. “It was beaten into me to sing.”

J. Remy said his ability to sing is a gift from God, and he’s excited about the opportunity to share it.
