Poet Quentin Talley, or Q as we call him, is one of the city’s most active playwright’s and director’s. When he’s not bringing his theatrical visions to life, you can catch him delivering poetry at Wine-Up and other spots in Charlotte and beyond. He talks about his favorite artists, and the group whose music he’d most like to turn into a play.

If you could meet any singer – dead or alive – who would you want to meet? Why?

It would have to be Ms. Nina Simone. She was an artist in every sense of the word; from composing to performing, she had a great gift of music and was conscious about it. Would love to have gotten the chance to talk to her about life and her experiences.

What song brings back the most memories for you? Why?

oh there are so many i can’t name them all… but a few are, Elevators- outkast & How Many Mics- fugees, remind me of high school… Both Hands- ani difranco, Drowning- ak1200, and Sometimes-bilal

What’s your favorite musical era? Why?

Each era gave us something a little different… but if i have to choose one, I guess it would be the 70s…

What song would you most like to turn into a play? Why?

The Ohio Players… The lyrics are so open you can go anywhere with the theme… plus its just plain funky…

What’s your favorite summertime song?

“Summertime” – DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince.
