VIA CHARLOTTE OBSERVER

In an email to supporters, the Democratic National Committee announced Wednesday that Charlotte is one of four finalists for its 2012 convention.

“It’s a huge deal,” Mayor Anthony Foxx, a Democrat, told the Charlotte Observer on Wednesday night. “The 2012 Democratic National Convention carries a significant and positive economic impact and will also put our city, our region and our state on an international stage.”

The other finalists are Cleveland, Minneapolis and St. Louis. The party is expected to choose a date by the end of the year. The Observer reports that this is the closest the city has ever been to hosting a national convention.

The GOP Convention finalists are Salt Lake City, Phoenix and Tampa, according to CNN.
