North Carolina’s Elizabeth City State University recently became the recipient of a$50,000 grant from Home Depot. The grant was a part of the companies ReTool Your School contest, which asked HBCUs to send a proposal on how they would use the money to make an improvement to their school.

Through a combination of public voting and careful review by a distinguished panel of judges that included: Jasmine Guy, actress/director; Rev. Bernice King, civil rights activist; Leon Kerry, commissioner of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA); Dr. Lezli Baskerville, executive director of the National Association for Equal Opportunity in Higher education (NAFEO); and Monica Newman McCluney, director of the United Negro College Fund, Elizabeth City State was chosen as the major grant winner.

Home Depot also awarded $10,000 grants to 10 other HBCUs.
