Former Mayor Pro Tem and longtime City of Charlotte leader Susan Burgess died this morning.

She served this community admirably in many fashions for our children, seniors and those in between.  Today she moved on to glory after her battle with cancer. You and your level of service will be missed my many Susan. I and my family extend prayers for strength and understanding.

Mayor Anthony Foxx issued the following statement regarding Burgess’ death:

“I received word this morning from the Burgess family that Mayor Pro Tem Susan Burgess passed away in her home at 6:25 a.m. surrounded by her husband Pat and her children.  The Charlotte community mourns the loss of one of the strongest, most courageous public servants we have ever known in Susan Burgess.  She has left an indelible mark throughout our community in public education, arts and culture, housing, the environment and countless other ways.  She battled cancer by refusing to be bound by it, maintaining her zest for living and her desire to keep serving others.  I will miss my great friend and send heartfelt condolences to her family.”

Funeral arrangements are pending and will be announced in the upcoming days.

Mayor Foxx has ordered that flags at city buildings be flown at half-staff in honor of Susan Burgess and her service to the community.  Flags will be lowered immediately and remain at half-staff until Monday, June 21, 2010 after the City Council Meeting.
