Actor Don Cheadle is known around the world as an advocate of environmental issues.  His work on clean energy and climate change and his avid campaigning for genocide victims were all reasons the United Nations named him a Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations Environment Program last week during a ceremony to mark World Environment Day.

Cheadle’s appointment was made in Kingali, Rwanda.

UNEP Executive Director  and United Nations under-secretary-general Achim Steiner said he and the UNEP were honored to welcome Cheadle as  Goodwill Ambassador.

“UNEP does not appoint Goodwill Ambassadors lightly. Through his humanitarian work and his passion for the environment, Mr. Cheadle will raise green awareness among millions of people around the planet and draw attention to ways we can deal with issues like pollution and environmental-based conflict.”
