VIA CHARLOTTE OBSERVER

In what could be the first round of closings, Charlotte Mecklenburg Library trustees agreed last week to shut down the Carmel, Belmont Center and CheckIt Outlet branches by June 19. The trustees also agreed to temporarily close the Beatties Ford Road branch, which is currently under renovation, starting July 3. The branch would reopen in early 2011, and would replace the Freedom Regional Center as the regional library on the west side of town, library leaders said.

The announcement followed a much celebrated decision in March by the library board to keep all branches open.
