For many people, Memorial Day weekend is a chance to kick off the summer and head to the beach. While NASCAR fans takeover the city of Charlotte, outlying communities spend the weekend commemorating our fallen soldiers. Below is a list of area Memorial Day events.

11:00 a.m.

Join the Cornelius PARC Department and the American Legion Post 86

at Legion Park for this annual event honoring veterans and those currently serving in our armed forces. American Legion Post 86 Commander John Washam will lead a ceremony that will include a keynote speaker, patriotic songs and the placing of the Wreath of Remembrance in honor of those who perished in all war.

* Monday, May 31

6:30 p.m

Birkdale Village will once again be the site of the 2010 Huntersville Memorial Day Ceremony on May 31st. Bob Doran, Chair of the Memorial Day Committee, announced a Flag Folding presentation is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. by the Cadets from North Mecklenburg High School Junior ROTC.

9 a.m.

Muster at Rideout Field for 9 a.m. and Garrison St. for noon.

The morning ceremony assembles at Rideout Field on Laws Brook Rd. at 8:30 a.m. and proceeds to Kenneth Dunn Square for the flag raising and brief ceremony at 9 a.m.

At 11:30 a.m. the parade re-assembles at Garrison/Ash Street for the afternoon ceremonies. The parade proceeds first to St. Bernard’s and Sleepy Hollow Cemeteries. There is a short ceremony at each location. The parade will pause at the Knoll at Sleepy Hollow to acknowledge Veterans buried there. The Parade then continues to Monument Square for the reading of the Roll of Honor at approximately 1:15 p.m.

MON, MAY 31; 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Come remember with us those who have died for our country. Activities

will include children’s military drills and firearm demonstrations, cooking

demonstrations, house tours, and toys and games. Site closes at 5 p.m
