A startling on-camera confrontation shows a White man hurling racial slurs at veteran WBTV TV reporter Steve Crump, WYFF reports.

Steve Crump, a Black veteran reporter for WBTV in Charlotte, North Carolina, was called the N-word while on assignment in Charleston, South Carolina, on October 8. Crump and his photographer, Devin Futrelle, were reporting on the aftermath of Hurricane Matthew, when Crump was accosted by Brian Eybers of Virginia as he walked towards the WBTV news van, according to The Charlotte Observer.

“Can you say that one more time? Come on, what did you call me?” Crump asks as he walks towards Eybers.

“I called you sir,” Eybers responds.

“No you did not call me ‘sir,’ you called me the N-word right?” Crump says.

“I did. I believe I did call you the N-word,” Eybers says–later adding that the Constitution and God gives him the right to do so.

After Crump gives Eybers a short history lesson on the Constitution and makes note that they serve the same God, Eybers calls Crump ” f—— ignorant.”

“You really are a n—– then,” Eybers quips.

As Crump walks off, Eybers approaches the van, blocking the exit. Futrelle continues filming, while Eybers pulls out an iPad to film as some form of retaliation. Crump promptly calls 911 once inside the van to report the incident and Eybers’ erratic behavior.

Eybers was later arrested for disorderly conduct on the steps of a nearby Catholic church. He’s currently being held at the Charleston County Detention Center with bond set at $722, WYFF reports. According to the outlet, authorities found a crack pipe on Eybers’ person.

Crump tweeted gratitude to supporters for their positive words following the altercation.

Crump, who hails from Louisville, Kentucky, is a celebrated journalist and has received numerous accolades for his reporting and documentaries on civil rights.
