The positive press around Nate Parker’s film ‘Birth Of A Nation’ came to a screeching halt when news of his 1999 rape accusation resurfaced.

At first, Nate took the backlash with an air of bravado, fiercely defending his innocence. But that all changed when it was revealed that his college accuser killed herself just a couple of years ago. Nate’s public tone changed drastically from that moment on, turning instead to empathy for the entire incident.

In an exclusive interview with Steve Harvey, he speaks out candidly about how he felt when he learned his accuser had passed, saying it “shocked my soul.”

He also addressed co-star Gabrielle Union’s heartfelt open letter to the LA Times, where she discussed the controversy head on from the perspective of a rape survivor. In the movie, Gabrielle doesn’t have a speaking role, but she is at the center of an emotional, fictionalized rape scene. Nate described his relationship with Gabby, saying hearing her violent account  made ‘his blood boil.” He also offered himself  and his platform as an ally for the fight:

Time will tell if Nate’s forward approach to the controversy yield box office success when ‘Birth Of A Nation’ hits theaters October 7th.

His interview will air on Steve Harvey on Wednesday, October 5th.
