Some of our favorite Canadian pups are in immediate danger, fellow dog lovers.

Less than 24 hours ago, news of a controversial bylaw that could really take a toll on the pit bull breed gained traction on the internet. Montreal reportedly passed legislation that bans new ownership of pit bulls and pit bull-type dogs.

According to Global News, “Among the targeted breeds are Staffordshire bull terriers, American pit bull terriers, American Staffordshire terriers, a mix with these breeds and dogs that show characteristics of any of the mentioned breeds.”

The new rule is essentially a death sentence for thousands of our furry BFFs, as pit bulls or pit bull-like dogs that are currently in shelters and/or have no owner will be euthanized. For those dogs who have a home, owners have until March to “undergo a criminal background check and pay $150 for a special permit. Their dog will have to be sterilized, vaccinated and microchipped —as well as muzzled and on a 4-foot leash at all times in public,” reports the Dodo.

The breed-specific ban comes less than three months after a dog attack claimed the life of a Montreal woman. Mayor Denis Coderre told the city of the bylaw, “My duty as mayor of Montreal is making sure I am working for all Montrealers. And I am there to make sure they feel safe and that they are safe.”

Like most animal advocates (and anyone with a heart), we’re totally disappointed in the rush judgment. Take a moment to celebrate our four-legged friends in the gallery below. What a shame.
