The colorful photo collection was inspired by the Oscar winner’s new film Queen of Katwe, the tale of a Ugandan girl who excels at the game of chess.
“To play a mother of four in Uganda, a formidable mother who has so much working against her, was so compelling to me. It wasn’t something I thought I’d be asked to do. The fact that it was based on a true story, an uplifting story out of Africa . . . . Oh, my goodness, all my dreams were coming true in that script,” she told the magazine about the movie.
Perhaps there isn’t a more beautiful dream come true than returning to your roots to share where you’ve come from.

The spread showcases the beauty of Lupita’s native home and her family. Here, The Star Wars: The Force Awakens actress wears a Duro Olowu silk coat and skirt, accompanied by her 96-year-old grandmother:
In another family moment, wearing a Zac Posen dress, Lupita curls up on the stoop of her home with her parents, Senator Peter Anyang’ Nyong’o and Dorothy Nyong’o:
Despite the stunning photos of the landscape and her family, Lupita didn’t make this trip home just for a photo-op.
Ever committed to investing in her craft and the continent, Lupita partnered with Salim Visram to promote battery-powered back packs to assist children during their long walks to school. The bag is powered by solar energy so by the end of the day, students are able to work by LED light. Lupita herself penned the tagline for the project “The power is in your step.”
Clearly the power is in Lupita’s steps as she tackles her next project: bringing to life author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie‘s classic Americanah.
Lupita told the magazine she hopes to work with directors Kathryn Bigelow or Ava DuVernay, and possibly even bring the story of social activist Assata Shakur to mainstream media.
The way her career is set up, nothing can stop her.
