'Tupac: Resurrection' World Premiere

Afeni Shakur, former member of the Black Panther Party and mother of rapper Tupac Shakur, died Monday in Northern California.

She was 69 years old.

Deputies from the Marin County Sheriff’s Department responded to a possible cardiac arrest situation around 9:34 p.m. at her home, USA Today reports. Shakur, born Alice Faye Williams, was transported to a nearby hospital. She was pronounced dead less than an hour later.

Shakur was honored by Tupac in the classic 1995 song “Dear Mama.” The philanthropist and businesswoman had been very involved in the forthcoming All Eyez On Me biopic about her son, which is scheduled for release later this year. Danai Gurira from The Walking Dead is reportedly playing Shakur in the film.

After Pac’s 1996 death, she founded the Tupac Amaru Shakur Foundation to help foster art programs for the youth.
