Camille Cosby, the wife of disgraced comedian Bill Cosby, was deposed Monday in her husband’s defamation case after losing several bids to exempt her testimony.
According to ABC News, Cosby filed a bid to avoid taking the stand in Springfield, Massachusetts on Friday. After the motion was denied, she filed an emergency bid Monday morning. Cosby’s lawyers claimed the 71-year old “has had no involvement with the facts or allegations underlying this case.” They also argued that Cosby’s deposition would create more unwanted media attention for her husband and the case. U.S. District Judge Mark Mastroianni denied the bid on Sunday, citing “there is no meritorious basis for the relief being sought.”
Her deposition would be the first reported involvement in her husband’s numerous sexual assault claims. Security was tight-knit as Cosby took part in the deposition at the Springfield Marriott. Hotel staff cordoned off the area of the hotel near the conference room where Cosby gave her deposition and later pulled heavy draperies across the hallway so no one could see the door to the room.
Normal depositions often include the people being deposed, their lawyers and a stenographer in the room, the site reports.
Over 50 women have accused the entertainer of sexual assault, with incidents dating back to the 1960s. Seven women have filed suits against him in Massachusetts, and he is currently facing sexual assault charges in Pennsylvania from former Temple University employee Andrea Constand. The former mentee of Cosby’s claimed she was drugged and sexually assaulted by the comedian at his Philadelphia home in 2004.
A judge ruled Cosby would, in fact, face charges, after he claimed a former district attorney verbally promised him immunity from prosecution during the case’s initial trial a decade ago.
The civil case Cosby’s wife is set to testify in is separate from Constand’s case, but the site reports the deposition can be used if lawyers decide to link the cases. Cosby’s role in her husband’s career also puts her in the position of a suitable testimony. Cosby served as her husband’s business manager, meaning questions about their business, not their personal conversations, can be asked.
Cosby is currently suing some of his accusers for defamation, claiming they destroyed his public persona with little-to-no evidence.
