According to a new study, the nation’s capital is leading the country in Black unemployment. The research, which was conducted by the Economic Policy Institute, revealed that during the third quarter of this year, the jobless rate for African-Americans in Washington D.C. was 13.6 percent, 5.7 times more than Whites. This statistic illustrates the largest racial unemployment gap in the country. Nationwide, Blacks have the highest unemployment rate at 9.2 percent compared to 6.4 percent for Latinos, 4.4 percent for Whites, and 3.6 percent for Asians. The study showed that the best place for African-American employment is Massachusetts, where the unemployment rate is 5.7 percent. Some of the factors that contribute to Black unemployment are racially biased hiring methods, the lack of government jobs, and discrimination. Read more.


TV One to Air “Unsung” Marathon

Calling all Unsung fans! TV One is slated to air all 99 episodes of the series to lead up to their 100th episode special. The six-day marathon will kick-off on Thanksgiving evening and run all hours of the day through December 1st, when the 100th episode will air. “Since its conception over seven years ago, ‘Unsung’ has been, hands-down, one of our most loved series,” said Brad Siegel, TV One’s President, in a statement. “Music is at the root of black culture and this show continues to celebrate and honor artists vital to those roots and explore stories that continue to shock and amaze our viewers today.” The 100th episode, which is being dubbed Unsung: Top Ten That Changed the Game, will be hosted by Donnie Simpson, who will highlight the most memorable episodes. The Unsung Marathon will kick-off on Thursday, November 26th at 8:00 p.m. and the 100th episode will air on December 1st at 8:00 p.m. Read more.


Eddie Murphy Expecting a Child

Comedian Eddie Murphy and his girlfriend Paige Butcher are expecting a baby. According to Murphy’s rep, the couple, who have been dating for four years, will welcome a bundle of joy in May. Although this will be the first child 36-year-old Butcher and 54-year-old Murphy will have together, he already has eight other children that range between the ages of 26 and 8. Murphy recently received the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor award. He also nabbed a role in an upcoming biopic about the life of comedic legend Richard Pryor. Read more.


South Africa Faces Worst Drought in 30 Years

South Africa has been confronted with one of the worst natural disasters it’s seen in three decades. Due to a drought, over 2.7 million people are dealing with water shortages. According to Lennox Mabaso, a spokesperson for the government in KwaZulu-Natal, the drought is not only affecting people’s day-to-day lives, but the economy as well. “The dams are at an all-time low. This is an epic drought and [the] government is doing the best it can do. As you can imagine, it requires a lot of resources, and it’s impacting everyone, rich and poor,” said Mabaso. The capital of South Africa, Pretoria, has put several water restrictions into effect. The last time South Africa experienced a drought like this was in 1982. Read more.
