In a time when studios are updating your favorite movies with sequels, Sanaa Lathan thinks Love & Basketball should probably skip out on the trend.
Hollywood loves a good sequel, and it doesn’t matter how much time has passed since the original film came out. And, if ticket sales for films like Best Man Holiday are indicator, fans aren’t concerned about the wait either.
Among the films that audiences have been hoping would make a comeback, Love & Basketball has to be near the top of the list. Although Sanaa starred in the classic, she’s got no idea whether she’ll ever reprise the role of Monica Wright.
“You would have to speak to Gina Prince-Bythewood, the director of Love & Basketball about that officially,” Sanaa told Kontrol.
If it were up to her, though, fans would just have to comfort themselves with the memory of the original because Sanaa doesn’t think there’s any more to the story. “I’ve heard the rumors and I feel like that [Love & Basketball] was a story to itself,” she said. “I mean how could you go about making a sequel to it? I feel the ending was pretty finite.”
Sanaa has also been linked to Netflix’s Luke Cage series, where we can only assume she would play Misty Knight. When Kontrol asked whether she can confirm the casting rumors, the actress side-stepped the question.
“Really? You heard that?” she asked with a laugh. “Well, I would have to read the script first and know who’s starring in it. Then you never know.”
