Cleveland County School Board members voted 8-to-2  last night to continue with a moment of silence instead of prayer before meetings.

This has been highly controversial in the county, as every other governmental entity in Cleveland County prays before their meetings. All except the school board.  Other organizations have gathered to request that board members pray before their meetings, in order to align with the Christian values of the community.

Emotions ran high in last nights meeting and the room reached capacity and individuals were asked to leave to stay in compliance with fire code regulations.

The ACLU has responded to the push for prayer, indicating that public school board meeting should be welcoming to constituents of all beliefs.

The next meeting is on November 9 and is certain to be an issue.
