Roland Martin talks to Candice Tolbert, the mother of a 12-year-old black boy who was suspended for allegedly “intimidating” a young white girl after playing the staring game.
“You have two children interacting. She was giggling, he was staring. When she said stop, he stopped. The school basically convinced him that he did something wrong. The parents wrote a letter to the school saying that their daughter was scared to go to school. They said that her laughter was out of fear.”
Why the parents decided to sue:
“We sued because we didn’t find the basis for the suspension. We thought it was aggressive. He shouldn’t have to carry a mark on his academic. The mislabeling on the academic can have repercussions later down on this line.”
