America already has a First Family in the White House – and it’s certainly not the Kardashians.

Like many Americans, I was disgusted with Cosmopolitan magazine boldly making the headline claim “America’s First Family,” which features the Kardashian and Jenner women on the cover of the November 2015 issue.

What an awful decision by Cosmopolitan’s editors to shamelessly sell magazines.

It’s disrespectful to the Obamas – the actual First Family of America — and it begs the question of whether the editors at Cosmopolitan casually dismissed the Obamas because the family is black?

If the Clintons or Kennedys were in the White House, would Cosmopolitan magazine’s cover line still read “America’s First Family” with the Kardashians posing on the cover? The magazine pictures Kris Jenner, Kim Kardashian, Khloe Kardashian, Kourtney Kardashian, Kendall Jenner and Kylie Jenner all dressed in white.

What’s troubling about the cover is that it automatically diminishes the historic role of the Obamas – America’s first African-American First Family — and trivializes the critically important initiatives that President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama are supporting for all Americans.

The Obamas – the actual First Family – are smart, thoughtful, superb role models for all American families. In fact, the Obama’s daughters — Malia, 17 and Sasha, 14, were named two of “The 25 Most Influential Teens of 2014” by Time magazine.

Meanwhile, the Kardashians are reality television caricatures. Are the Kardashians respectable role models for young women? I don’t think so. They seem to be all about fashion, fun, and volatile relationships. And just how has the matriarch of the clan, Kris Jenner, helped to improve the quality of life for Americans?

Michelle Obama initiated a much-needed and successful campaign called Let’s Move! – a national campaign that encourages young people to exercise regularly and eat healthy and seeks to unite the country around our children’s health while creating tangible support for families to live healthier lives.

“We all need to work together on this issue, because we know that issues like child nutrition, it’s not about politics.  This is about giving our children a fair shot in life,” Michelle Obama said. “It’s about ensuring that they have everything they need, everything we can do in our power to help them fulfill their boundless potential.”
