As promised, the women turned away from a London club for being “too dark” and “too fat,” took to the streets with supporters Tuesday night to protest the alleged racial discrimination.
The women — Lin Mei, Zalika Miller, Reisha and Tasha Campbell — arrived outside of DSTRKT nightclub Tuesday night for a peaceful protest to blast the popular club for denying entry to two members of the group based on their skin tone and body type, BBC Newsbeat reports. Their story went viral after Mei and Miller shared the experience on social media.
Mei, who is biracial, was allowed into the club Saturday evening. Her friends Tasha and Reisha were not. Calling the behavior unacceptable, the ladies sought to bring awareness to the venue’s discriminatory practices.
“There needs to be equality,” Zalika Miller, Lin’s friend, told Newsbeat.
“You need to let everybody in your club. I shouldn’t not be allowed into a club because of the way I look.”
The 26-year-old says other women have since been sharing their experiences of getting into clubs.
“A lot of girls have been messaging me saying, ‘The same thing has happened to me.’”
Women and men alike dressed up to call out the club and used the hashtags #DoILookDSTRKT and #DSTRKT on Twitter.
The women also asked Karrueche Tran, model and ex-girlfriend of Chris Brown, to cancel her appearance at the nightclub that evening. The personality did not postpone her appearance, but did call the incident unfortunate.
The club has yet to release a formal statement on the matter.
