It’s hard not to fall in love with Andra Day as soon as you hear her raspy voice. She draws you in and keeps you locked with her refreshing artistry and charming pin-up style.
With the arrival of visuals for her song Gin & Juice (Let Go My Hand), her star is continuing to rise. The stripped-down clip shows Andra in the studio as she recorded the Raphael Saadiq produced ballad.
“Just me and my thoughts/ And some gin and juice/ A little gift for myself that I bought/ For years of scraping behind you,” she sings. “Don’t hold my hand boy,” she croons on the chorus.
“‘Gin & Juice’ is cooler than the North Pole!’ Andra says with enthusiasm. “It’s about habits or vices you want to get rid of but you can’t, whether in a relationship or that thing/issue you can’t let go of.”
Andra penned the tune with Raphael Saadiq, who she says, encouraged her “to experiment with the records for Cheers to the Fall.”
Despite being intimidated by his star power, Andra says he made her feel like “family.”
“He was very nurturing with the songs I had created and became so close to with a fresh a ear. He came up with the ‘Let go my hand, boy, let go my hand’ and I was like ‘o, let’s make this thing a person’ because sometimes it is a person. So it’s about telling that thing ‘let go of me,’ ‘you don’t have a hold of me anymore.’”
Andra’s garnered support from legendary entertainers like Stevie Wonder, Erykah Badu, Patti Labelle and more. We can’t wait to hear her debut project.
