Racial tensions arose on Saturday in Douglasville, Georgia, when a fleet of vehicles toting the Confederate flag approached a child’s birthday party.

Two different bystanders captured the incident on cell phone, portraying two different accounts of what happened. According to the Atlanta Journal Constitution, Melissa Alford — the woman who hosted the party — witnessed the individuals in the trucks call out racial slurs directed towards her and the other Black party-goers at the home.

On one of the cell phone recordings, the slur can be heard as the trucks approach the area.

“One had a gun, saying he was gonna kill the [racial slur].” She continued, “Then one of them said gimme the gun, I’ll shoot them [racial slur].”

“I don’t have a problem if that’s their culture,” Alford said “… If they want to make a statement that these flags mean something to them, I’m OK with that. But you’ve got to do it right. You can’t go around just blatantly terrorizing people.”

Levi Bush, a driver of one of the vehicles, told AJC reporters that as the convoy drove by, people outside of Alford’s home were yelling and throwing stones at the cars bearing the flags. He claims Alford’s guests aggressively approached him and his group, causing Bush to hit a median in an attempt to get away from the arising conflict. It was then that he claims his friends supported him. “Basically about eight of us had to hold 15 to 20 of them back,” he said.

Bush said he and his crew were leaving an event and the incident was not intentional. The other cell video shows police officers holding a group of Black men and women back from Bush and the other drivers.

No injuries were reported, but police are reviewing the accounts of each party to investigate if anything criminal occurred.
