Bill Cosby admitted to shamelessly using money, power and drugs to pursue women for his numerous affairs in court documents that have just been released.
This just keeps getting worse.
In a 2005 deposition obtained by The New York Times, Cosby detailed how he met a number of different women before getting intimate with them. The comedian was subject to four days of questioning to determine whether he’d coerced any of those women into a sexual relationship It was part of a lawsuit brought against him by a woman named Andrea Constand, who accused him of drugging and molesting her.
Cosby didn’t deny slipping Constand some drugs before things got physical, but he said it was only a tablet-and-a-half of Benadryl. For the record, Cosby admitted to her attorney that he had about seven prescriptions for Quaaludes during the 1970s because it was a party drug.
“What was happening at that time was that that was — Quaaludes happen to be the drug that kids, young people were using to party,” he said, “there were times when I wanted to have them just in case.”
He also implied that he would often offer women Quaaludes back then in much the same way you would offer someone a cocktail today. Making the comparison, he said, “[It was] the same as a person would say, ‘Have a drink.’”
Cosby contended that his interaction with Constand was consensual because she didn’t appear to be upset after the act. Speaking to Constand’s attorney in the deposition, he reasoned:
“I walk her out. She does not look angry. She does not say to me, ‘Don’t ever do that again.’ She doesn’t walk out with an attitude of a huff – because I think that I’m a pretty decent reader of people and their emotions in these romantic sexual things, whatever you want to call them.”
All told, Constand was one of five women with whom he admitted having an affair. According to court documents, Cosby tried to hide his affairs from his wife Camille through some financial deception. However, she found out about at least one of those trysts around 1997.
When it came to his relationship with Constand in particular, Cosby admitted that he tried to cover up their affair by offering to pay for her educational expenses with a personal check. Although Cosby has a foundation that gives out educational grants, he would have told his wife he was helping Constand out of his own pocket because he’d taken a special interest in her. “I would say to her that there is a person I would like to help,” Cosby stated.
In reality, Cosby was hoping to use the educational assistance as hush money because he was afraid that Constand and her mother would try to embarrass him by taking their story to the media. In other words, it was a bribe.
This wasn’t his only attempt to pay a woman off in exchange for her silence. He had the William Morris Agency send a woman named Therese Serignese a check for $5,000 after she claimed he’d taken advantage of her Las Vegas. He then reimbursed his agent for the pay out so that Mrs. Cosby couldn’t track where the money had gone. Officially, Therese’s money was a bonus for good grades.
Mentoring also seemed to be part of his M.O. as Cosby stated during the deposition that he would sometimes offer professional advice to the women he was sleeping with. And he wasn’t above faking concern for his mistresses. In the case of model named Beth Ferrier, he said they would speak about her career, but he’d also about her father’s failing health.
Of course all of that attention came with ulterior motives. When directly asked whether he inquired about Ferrier’s ailing father because he wanted to have sexual contact with her, Cosby answered, “Yes.”
