According to a new study, the suicide rate amongst African-American children has almost doubled within the last two decades. The research, which was published in JAMA Pediatrics earlier this week, showed that the rate for Black children between the ages of 5 to 11 has increased from 1.36 per one million children to 2.54. The suicide rate for White children declined from 1.14 to .77. The data was collected between 1993 and 2012. Many people are surprised by the trend, because suicide is more common amongst Whites at any age. “What it means to grow up young and Black has changed. Something happened that put Black teens at risk,” said Sean Joe, a social work professor at Washington University in St. Louis. “I find the rates for children even more troubling, because they are the most vulnerable.” Read more.
Former NFL Player Adrian Robinson Dead at 25
Former NFL player Adrian Robinson has passed away. Robinson, who was a linebacker for the Denver Broncos, died Saturday night. According to the Philadelphia medical examiner’s office, his death was ruled a suicide. Robinson’s journey in the NFL was nothing short of tough. He had stints with various teams, including the Steelers, Chargers, Washington Football Team, Eagles, and Broncos. He was released from the Broncos in 2013. Robinson was 25-years-old. Read more.
Man Who Shot George Zimmerman Placed in Mental Institution
The man who shot George Zimmerman during a recent altercation has reportedly been placed in a mental institution. Last week, Matthew Apperson turned himself in and was hit with a slew of charges, including aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, firing a deadly missile into an occupied conveyance, and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. According to a Lake Mary police official, Apperson suffers from mental issues. “During the investigation, I learned that Apperson has exhibited unusual behavior in which he had recently been admitted to a mental institution. It appears that Apperson has a fixation on Zimmerman and has displayed some signs of paranoia, anxiety, and bipolar disorder,” wrote an officer. Read more.
