Million Moms March

Large crowds joined mothers from all walks of life Saturday afternoon to participate in Washington DC’s “Million Moms March” — a gathering to call for an end to police brutality by those who lost children and loved ones at the hands of law enforcement.

According to the Huffington Post, the march was led by the founder of Mothers For Justice United, Maria Hamilton, and co-sponsored by the Coalition of Justice. Hamilton’s own son, 31-year-old Dontre Hamilton, was shot and killed by a Milwaukee police officer in April 2014. Family members say Hamilton was suffering from a mental illness, sparking concern and outrage over how police officers approach and handle these sensitive situations.

The officer in Hamilton’s shooting was not criminally charged.

From the Huffington Post:

Maria Hamilton launched Mothers for Justice United shortly after her son’s death, and on Saturday called for the support of other bereaved mothers, who collectively marched to the front steps of the Justice Department. As they walked through the capital, demonstrators held signs that read, “Stop racist police terror” and “Black Lives Matter.”

As Hamilton led the way, mothers and their friends and family members marched on in solidarity. For Hamilton, there was only one mission: “To make their voices heard in the halls of government, to demand justice for their murdered children, and to put an end to the race-based policies of police and vigilante violence in minority communities.”

The Millions Moms March Facebook page is continually updated with photographs of those who died during encounters with law enforcement, garnering responses from mothers, friends, siblings, and loved ones about strength, grieving, and reform.
