Clarence “Big House” Gaines is ranked fifth in all time college victories behind coaches like Dean Smith and Bob Knight. Coach Gaines put the CIAA on the map. He coached at Winston-Salem State for 47 years for a remarkable 828-447 record. He guided WSSU to the Division II national championship in 1967 as the Rams went 31-1.
