Brandice Henderson-Daniel, Founder & CEO of Harlem’s Fashion Row, Inc. and The Cliff Jump Series

Determining your life’s passions, as it pertains to work and career may not be as easy for some as it may be for others. Sometimes life’s circumstances and/or other’s expectations for us get in the way of allowing ourselves to dream for what it is we truly want from work and what areas ignite our passions.

Having to pay bills and deciding to play it safe by seeking any form of employment have both stood in the way of going for what it is I truly wanted, and I know the same can be said for others as well.

Despite all of the demands against us, how can one still pursue their passion and still keep their day jobs?

Is it even possible to do both?

According to Brandice Henderson-Daniel, Founder and CEO of Harlem’s Fashion Row, Inc. and The Cliff Jump Series, your day job may be hindering the progress of your passion.

“It was my 4th year in business with HFR, and all of my being was focused on my business. I would go to work and feel totally disconnected. I knew at the beginning of that year that I would have to make a cliff jump and leave my job. I had so much fear about it, but I was more fearful of what would happen to my business if I didn’t leave my job. So I jumped.” After leaving her job and focusing solely on her passion and her business, Brandice’s companies and events have been recognized during New York Fashion Week and at the Grammy’s.

Hannah Kane of Idealistcareers.org suggests taking the following actions if you believe your day job may be hindering you:

• Take action by volunteering, advocating for, or networking in the industry or company you would like to work in or for.

• Start over. If you found yourself stuck in a rut, see your job with “fresh eyes” or tackle new projects. Set up informational interviews with those who are doing what you want. Essentially, do not allow yourself to remain stagnant.

• If you are not sure what your passion actually, pay attention to what you do in your free time. That may be a big indicator.

• “Finally, consider thinking about happiness beyond your job. Sometimes we think we should feel a certain way about our work, but when we get real with ourselves, we realize that we’re perfectly content to have a job where we simply enjoy our day-to-day, but we get our deepest satisfaction from some other part of our lives.”
