(GALVESTON, TX)— We have new information about a man who is wanted in connection with the disappearance of a Virginia college co-ed.
We’re still learning about exactly how Jesse Matthew was caught on the beach on the Bolivar Peninsula.
Sheriff Henry Trochesset said Matthew was on the beach for a couple days and a woman thought something didn’t look right.
“I’m not sure she recognized it was him or the fact of what was going on surrounding him made her feel compelled to contact us,” Trochesset said.
Deputy Ross Perez made the arrest. We learned he’s a retired Galveston police officer who came to work at the Sheriff’s office a few years ago.
As for the suspect, he’s not taking any calls, even from a well-known community activist. For now he’s being segregated from other inmates.
“We want to make sure he’s safe and secure and no one is able to get to him,” Trochesset said.
Three investigators from Virginia immediately started looking through Mattthew’s car.
Next they will interview him and hope he’s more willing to talk than his been so far.
